dreamhost.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

dreamhost "offers" Miva shopping cart hosting, but they only have one person
trained in Miva support, so if your store has a problem when that person is gone
- good luck!

My store has been down for almost 3 weeks, and I am in the process of
transferring to a new host. dreamhost customer service has been extremely slow,
frequently choosing to file my service requests into one person or another's
folder, rather than tell me anything. When I have heard back, I have been given
varying promises of attention and a fix, but nothing has happened, and no one
has bothered to tell me why.

Key to the whole problem is the apparent fact that dreamhost has not a clue of
what e-commerce is all about. While other hosts might be in a full-blown panic
if their e-commerce sites were down for a couple of hours, dreamhost is quite
content to allow the situation to go on indefinitely. Very unprofessional in
their approach.

I know of several other dreamhost Miva sites that are transferring, or have
transfered, to new hosts. So, most likely in the near future they will be
hosting very few Miva sites, and their competence in the area can be expected to
fall even further.

Tyan S5372 i5000VS

Tue, 29 Aug 2006 12:27:13 -0400

The latest buzz in the datacenter & server markets these days can be summed up as: Woodcrest.

Woodcrest is Intel's code-name for their newest Dual Core Xeon processor - which boasts two CPU cores on 1 chip, 4MB of shared cache, a claim of 40% better performance with a 40% reduction in power used. Wow. To every datacenter-centered person that is a dream come true. With the rising power & cooling costs, increasing performance and reducing power is essential.

With the latest reviews on hardware websites showing that these new chips blow away the competition in almost every area, we decided to use the new Woodcrest processor in a new reseller web hosting server that we're bringing online.

The first job was finding a Woodcrest process that would provide enough power & not bankrupt us (some of these Woodcrest CPUs are in the $1000 arena!)... we chose the Intel 5130 Dual Core Xeon. Then the going got tough.

MotherBoard
All of the Woodcrest motherboards that we could find were in the $300 - $500 range. We chose the Tyan S5372 i5000VS dual Woodcrest motherboard - it looked like a good choice.

RAM
Of course the new Woodcrest CPUs & motherboards require FB-DIMM DDR2 (that is Latin for: expensive)... loading the machine 4 with 4G of RAM was a tad expensive...

CASE
We use 2U cases from an excellent provider called ServerCase.com
Luckily we keep spare cases because they ship from California and it can take up to a week to get a case to us on the East Coast.

THE RESULTS
Thanks to 3 day shipping methods, our parts were delivered very quickly. We started to build the server and ran into 3 issues:
Problem 1) The new motherboards screw holes didn't line up with the 2U ATX case from ServerCase.com .. .there were 3 brackets coming up from the bottom of the case for screws, but there were no holes on the motherboard. Needless to say that is bad.... what to do? We don't want to wait to buy another case and delay the building process.
Solution: We used a drill to drill through the bottom of the case and remove the 3 offending metal brackets

Problem 2) The motherboard requires a EPS12V / SSI (24 + 8) power supply - our spares were all 24 + 4... damn. There's no way around this, we zip back over to ServerCase.com and order 2x (always need a spare, right?) I-Star Dual xeon power supplies & that is resolved

Problem 3) The 2U case requires special mounting brackets for a Dual Xeon motherboard... back to ServerCase.com to order the correct parts.

Hooray... uh oh?
Finally at this point everything looks good! The server is built (running very cool - Intel delivered on their low-power promise!), harddrives are installed, RAID card works, RAM is recognized, and life is good in server land.... right? Well, the last step is to go into the bios and change the "After Power Failure" setting to "Turn On"... this will allow us to reboot the server using our APC remote control strips. We go into the BIOS, change the setting, save the settings & restart.

We then pull out the power and plug it back in but the "After Power Failure" setting doesn't work! That is an essential feature for a remote controlled server. Panicking, we rush to Tyan's website to check for BIOS updates. Phew! There have already been 2 updates for this BIOS so surely they must have fixed the issue. We flash the BIOS to the latest 1.3 version and test it and it still doesn't work.
note about the motherboard flashing: Tyan says that it is required to boot into MSDOS with no HIMEM loaded but give no details on how to do this. It took us an hour or two of consulting people and websites to finally figure it out... thanks for the great instructions Tyan]

So the next step is to call Tyan's technical support (emailing their support was a maze of getting the proper subject and that was just plain old confusing).... to their credit they picked up right away and were very helpful. They setup the motherboard in their labs and tested it out and verified that the feature worked for them. Hmm... their official response is that the power supply that we're using is not supported. We pay $35 to do an RMA (over night, thankfully) in hopes that we somehow have a defective motherboard. The new motherboard arrives the next day from California and the problem still persists.

Now, I would accept the "unsupported power supply" theory, except when we use the CLEAR CMOS jumper on the motherboard to clear the BIOS settings, the next time we plug the power in, the system turns on automatically. That's right. If you clear the BIOS settings via the Jumper on the motherboard and plug the power back in, it will automatically turn on - but after that, even if you change the setting in the BIOS to "Turn On", it will not turn on!. That tells us that the motherboard & power supply together are in-fact physically capable of turning on after the power is plugged back in, it is simply a bug somewhere (either in hardware or software) that won't let it happen with our 'unsupported power supply'. Hopefully someone from Tyan will read this and look into this further.
FYI: The power supply that we're using is an I-Star TC-2U40 (400W Quiet 20/24+8+4pin power supply)]

update - 9/30/2006 - Tyan issued bios version 1.04, we had hoped that this would address the problem, but it did not.

Follow-Up & Results
Aside from the lack of ability to turn on after a power failure, the server is running very well - temperatures are low, performance is high & there has been no weird behavior or freezing. we fully tested the CPU & RAM before-hand to ensure that there were no problems with these parts]

We hope that this ending of our article on rtsp streaming server proves to be a beginning to your interest in rtsp streaming server! Now get down to learning more about rtsp streaming server!

Affordable Website Hosting Services - 5 Fantastic Tips To Ensure Satisfaction

Mon, 02 Jun 2008 12:24:41 GMT
Affordable website hosting services are everywhere you look nowadays, but sadly many should be avoided and you should never blindly jump in and simply use the cheapest hosting service you come across. Reliability is often an issue with many low cost hosting services but thankfully there are some affordable hosting companies that are reliable and as good as any top web hosting provider.

Business Website Tips

Business Websites - WebsiteMaven.comBusinesses have several motivations for building business websites. For some, the Internet is their only customer base, for others they want to promote professional services and add to an existing clientele. There may be different needs and motivations but there are some common characteristics for successful business websites that all businesses ought to take note of.

Content - This should be the up-front consideration. Many spend a long time making a web site look pretty but the key to a successful site that, both customers and search engines like, is good content that informs the reader and "tells" the search engine bots what your site is about. Your aiming point should be a site that informs, puts you in a niche, makes people want to reference you and come back. Graphics are nice but the most successful sites on the Internet are nearly completely text based. Some business web sites look fantastic with tons of eye grabbing stuff but if they fail to deliver content then, unless it is a marquee name, it will be primarily a piece of art for the company to admire and be of little use in driving new customers their way through search engines. Remember: content, content, content!

Secrets of cnet web hosting review

While web adoption is most often analyzed in terms of small businesses and personal publishing activity, 1 and 1 reveals evidence to show that small scale non-profit and social activism websites are making impressive gains on the Internet. Between December of 2006, and December of 2007, the world’s largest web host registered over 70,000 .ORG domains, seeing a unique and impressive increase of 31 percent.

Tips for successful Kernel Recompilation in Linux

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 11:40:04 -0500
"Kernel compilation is a tough nut to crack" - Most frequently this would be followed by a sigh if the recompiled kernel is not booting up. Though the nut has the look of a tough one to crack, kernel recompilation is still an inescapable affair that every Linux system administrator runs into, sooner or later. I too had to.
With this article, I intend to walk you through the phases of compiling a kernel. I am sure it will inspire confidence in you so that compiling a kernel is no longer a "mission impossible".

BlueHost News

1 Mar 2008 - Here we go again BlueHost.com has again increased their bandwidth
to 15,000 GB per month and increased their disk space to 1,500 GB. This is more
than double what they were offering just 4 months ago. However this certainly
shows that BlueHost is dedicated to giving their customers ample resources.

8 Dec 2007 - Well BlueHost has done it again. They have just doubled their
diskspace and bandwidth. This means you now get a huge 600GB of diskspace of
bandwidth and 6000GB of transfer. This should be enough to satisy even the most
bandwidth and diskspace hungry site. With these offerings and BlueHost's
unmatched reliability, BlueHost is undoubtedly the best value for money host out
there at the moment. I have had this site hosted on BlueHost for over 3 years
now and it's been an exceelent experience. I highly recommend BlueHost.com

1st Jan 2007 - BlueHost has just increased their plan offerings from 50GB
diskspace to 300GB diskspace and bandwidth has increased from 999GB to 3000GB.
For $6.95/month the plan that is being offered by BlueHost is undoubtedly the
best around. A great plan along with unbeatable support and custom service makes
BlueHost the top choice for web hosting. Just 2 years ago when I first wrote
this BlueHost review they were offering only 1GB of hosting space and 50Gb of
bandwidth. It is a clear sign that BlueHost is moving with the times.

My Experience With BlueHost

This site has been hosted with BlueHost for about 3 years (since July 2004) and
I have been nothing but impressed by BlueHost's superior support and
reliability. Their Phone and email support staff are extremely knowledgeable and
friendly. BlueHost offers A-Grade service and features for a very low price. If
you are looking for a cheap, reliable and feature packed host I highly recommend
BlueHost.com . I have hosted with many hosts including webcentral, globat and
ipowerweb, but nothing compares with BlueHost.

About BlueHost.com

Way back in 1996 the web hosting industry saw the introduction of yet another
webhost in BlueHost.com, another addition to an already growing list of service
providers. Many other service providers have come and disappeared since then,
but with their reliable service coupled with friendly and patient support staff
(rated as best support staff of 2005) BlueHost sits comfortably among the best
in the hosting business today.

Hosting Plans from BlueHost

BlueHost offers a great low-cost, high quality plan for only $6.95 a month, the
plan includes free registration of one domain name, 1,500 GB of hosting space,
and a huge 15,000 GB of bandwidth hosted on high performance Xeon servers which
are currently the best in the industry. One of the greatest advantages of
BlueHost is that you can host unlimited domains on one account this is a huge
saving if you have more than 1 site or excellent if you plan on making more.
With this plan you also get many added features like 2500 POP3 web based emails,
5 addon domains, FTP, PHP, CGI, cPanel and a lot more features that provide you
with the highest level of value for your money. Do a little search and
comparison and youll find that only BlueHost offers so much for such a low
price.

Reliability

BlueHost provides powerful and reliable web hosting services. As a customer of
BlueHost.com you can be assured of: Customer service satisfaction, best quality
equipment, a guaranteed uptime, highly functional administrative tools, the best
feature set available, secure and reliable routine backups, a 24/7 System
Administration staff, real time support the best support staff around and a
solid and honest business. They always have redundant parts on hand in the event
that there is a hardware failure of some type. The staff at BlueHost is highly
skilled and specialised in designated work areas and they can work to solve any
problem if it arises quickly and effectively. The BlueHost review has been
conducted as we find BlueHost to be very reliable and very good for sites that
always need to be available.

Support

For the package that they offer and the mass amount of clientele they have,
customer support at the highest level is a must. BlueHost delivers at that level
by providing quick and responsive support. A complete searchable database of
FAQ's, knowledge base and flash tutorials are all provided at their website just
to get you and your site going in the right direction. In addition, you can also
seek further technical, sales and billing assistance by telephone support on
their toll free number. With these many options, there's no issue that can't be
solved within a short time by BlueHosts highly attentive support staff.

Awards

The outstanding services of BlueHost have been recognised by the industry
through awards year after year. These include top host awards from major hosting
directories and review sites such as Web Hosting Jungle and Web Hosting Doctor .

Conclusion

This is one of the few older generation hosting companies that have survived the
fall. Today BlueHost stands differentiated as one of the most reliable and value
for money hosting solutions. Thousands of satisfied business and personal
website owners will approve for that any day. Their hosting package is designed
such that not only businesses but individuals also get high-powered service at a
very affordable cost of just $6.95/mo. Their specialist hosting team and award
winning support team knows exactly what it takes to be the best and how to help

The Future of SaaS, and What Puts ThinkFree Ahead of Google

Thu, 08 Mar 2007 18:30:00 -0400

ThinkFree is way cool! I signed up for an account earlier this week, and its web-based spreadsheet, word processor and slide presentation apps work beautifully. TJ Kang, the company's founder, has been developing office productivity software since the 1980s, and it shows.

Founded in 1999. ThinkFree spent its early years as a desktop software company. Its online edition was released in April 2005. Now the LA Library offers it on 2,200 computers across 71 branches, and NHN, a Korean telco with 20 million subscribers, has integrated the product with its email system. In addition, over 250,000 individual users have signed up for accounts.

Unlike Zoho, which offers an amazing breadth of hosted services, ThinkFree focuses on three applications - but makes them available in more forms than you can imagine. Let's count them:

1. The ThinkFree-hosted edition

2. The server edition (for self-hosting by enterprise customers and on-premise hosting by telco and ISP partners)

3. The iPod edition (so that you can travel with your sales presentation, but not your computer)

4. The USB edition (which allows you to edit documents on someone else's computer without leaving any trace of your work after you disconnect)

5. The upcoming premier edition (which allows synchronized online/offline document editing), and

6. The also upcoming SMB edition (which allows companies to create groups for different sets of employees to share different documents).

All of the above offer round trip compatibility with Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint.

But I think what makes ThinkFree really, truly awesome is the company's idea of what SaaS should be like. VP Marketing Jonathan Crow says that one of his most important priorities is DocExchange, a shared repository of user-submitted documents. Because there's more to online collaboration than sharing documents with people you already know. It's also about leveraging and building upon the enormous amount of collective knowledge out there - knowledge that would have been inaccessible without SaaS. SlideShare and Swivel will have to watch out; as DocExchange evolves, ThinkFree users will be able to view public slides/datasets/documents - and reuse them on the spot.

This is as exciting as Amazon's EC2 machine image sharing announcement earlier this year. As Amazon puts it, sharing accelerates community-wide innovation. Not coincidentally, ThinkFree's document viewer runs on EC2, and DocExchange files are stored on S3. (SlideShare is an S3 customer as well.)

Earlier today Dennis Howlett wrote that being a Connector (in the Tipping Point sense) is part of every service provider's job description. Some connections are specific (you could introduce two customers to each other), others are sort of self-organizing (SlideShare making customer A's knowledge accessible to B, C and D through tags, auto-recommendations, etc), and still others are implicit (Freshbooks making aggregated invoice data available to customers within the same industry).

In the future of SaaS, I think, winning vendors will get ahead by being the best Connectors rather than the snazziest technology providers. (Which is why biggest community wins.) ThinkFree is well on its way. Google will most likely catch up. And Zoho; I'd bet on that. 1&1 CEO Andreas Gauger tells eWeek that he hopes to generate more SaaS than hosting revenues within 3-4 years. Could it happen? While he's got a sizable customer base, he's far from being in the Connector business. If I were him, I'd give TJ a call :)

Come on Down, Then Sell Your Hosting Company

Tue, 20 May 2008 10:55:00 -0400

This is a no-brainer that can be hard to do. Family, friends, schools, pets all figure into the situation. But is should be on your plate.

Here are some of the top rates for state income taxes; Vermont 9.5%, Oregon 9% and New Jersey 8.97%.

Now there are many other states with high state income taxes. The California State Motto is Eureka "I have found it!" is aptly stated. After all California has a 9.3% state income tax rate plus a 1% kicker imposed on taxable income over $1 million. If I read the tax codes right that equals 10.3%.

Since it makes my case, let’s look at the worst case. You net $500k from your hosting business. In California you pay about $45k in state income taxes and another $155k in Federal Income Tax. So 40% goes to the government. Not to mention FICA, 8.5% sales tax etc.

So you decide to sell the business, it sells for $5 million. In California that adds about $500,000 of your money to the state coffers. You get $500k less. Your retirement fund just dropped $500k. That Ivy League school for the kids is a bit tougher to handle.

Do some family planning. Move to Florida, it has zero, nada, and no state income tax. So does Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Now the M&A Part – Buyers don’t make up for the sellers shortfall. It is just as easy to buy a company in Texas as in California. Think this one over for a while.

So talk to your attorney and accountant, make sure everything’s legal and makes sense. Then come on down to Florida a couple years before you sell. You could add some $600k to the retirement fund. Oh yes, real estate is a bargain since the bubble burst.

Written from Cape Coral, Florida - Rather than our old Milwaukee diggs (6.75%)
